I just finished reading Chief, Roger Blakely's debut novel.I give this one three stars because I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I liked the plot.
I could not give more stars because of the pacing. For a thriller slow pace is usually a killer, and even though the characters were compelling, it took me a long time to get through the book because of the pacing.
I am hoping it was just the first book as writers do get into their stride more with each book. And I would like to know Artemus gets into next.

Good, fast paced story. Well written.
Chief was a very entertaining read!! I enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot. I really liked Artie! It was really cute to see how much he loved and took care of his cat/son Gus. I loved that Alex the female lead character was strong yet she was very feminine. The book had a Tom Clacy and Lee Child vibe that I really enjoyed. Overall it was a great book and I would highly recommend it.
This is a great first in this series, looking forward to reading more books in the series.
Great book by Roger
Fun to read with lots of action. Our hero is ex-Army but not Rambo. A more regular kind of guy with great moral fiber. Easy to relate to, and easy to read about.
I enjoyed this debut novel. Having served in the military, I can understand the desire to re-visit old haunts. I respected Newton's attachment to his cat, Gus. I liked the fact when he was planning his trip to have his mother come and take care of her 'Grand Cat', shows dedication and love to his pet. The action in Germany and the States was well written, if a bit slow. All and all a good read.
It was a pleasure to meet Artemis Newton and Alexis Lee at the beginning of their adventures. Mr. Blakely develops his characters well, not perfectly, but in a likeable manner.
As soon as I started reading CHIEF I didn't want to put it down. Blakely knows his subject matter and his audience well. Without a doubt he's developed a perfect Everyman character in Artemus Newton and though most of us will not wander into CIA operations the scenarios are plausible and the results easy to believe.
Blakely keeps his characters in parallel action by moving between brief passages, making it possible for readers to keep up with the plot. No one will have to go back thirty pages to try to figure out what happened here.
One reviewer complained this might be aimed at young readers instead of adults. I disagree BUT parents and YA Librarians are always looking for books to keep guys interested. For many guys Blakely's CHIEF will do the trick.
Blakely also knows cats, but I'm afraid Gus is too lazy to ever compete with Brown's Mrs. Murphy.
